Major General Earl Van Dorn Battle Flag
Also known as the battle flag of the 4th Missouri Infantry, 8th division, Missouri State Guard. Flags of this design became known as the Van Dorn Pattern, as they were issued to units serving under the command of Major-General Earl Van Dorn in the Trans-Mississippi Department of the Confederacy in the western theatre. The flags were issued from June – September 1862, although some historians believe that the Van Dorn pattern flag was carried at the Battle of Pea Ridge in March of 1862. The flag design consists of 13 stars representing the 13 states admitted to the Confederacy along with a crescent moon on a red background that is trimmed in gold.
