The South Carolina State flag consists of a blue background with a white palmetto and crescent. The crescent was a throwback to the flag flown at Fort Moultrie during the battle of Sullivan’s island. The palmetto tree was added to the crescent design also as a representation of the palmetto logs laid against the walls of the fortress. The palmetto logs were successful in repelling British cannonballs during the bombardment. While the South Carolina state flag design has evolved several times over the last couple of centuries, the palmetto and crescent have always been present as a constant reminder of the Palmetto State’s brave history.
