South Carolina State Flag – Garden Size
Any South Carolinian should be proud to fly this beautifully embroidered, applique South Carolina garden flag. The artwork is appliqued onto both sides of the flag and outlined with embroidered stitching. Made for outdoors but beautiful enough to hang up inside as well.
The flag design consists of a blue background with a white palmetto and crescent. The crescent was a throwback to the flag flown at Fort Moultrie during the battle of Sullivan’s island in 1776 when colonial forces defended it against the British Navy. The uniforms of the fort’s defenders included a crescent badge on the cap, while the uniform was blue. The palmetto tree was added to the crescent design also as a representation of the palmetto logs laid against the walls of the fortress. The palmetto logs were successful in repelling British cannonballs during the bombardment. While the South Carolina state flag design has evolved several times over the last couple of centuries, the palmetto and crescent have always been present as a constant reminder of the Palmetto State’s brave history. The State’s legislature has never officially adopted an official flag design specifying the exact size and shape of the Palmetto and Crescent or the background color, so there is no “official” version of the flag and the design elements will vary slightly from one manufacturer to the next.
