Official National Flag of Russia
Also known as the State Flag of the Russian Federation. The design is a tri-color consisting of three horizontal stripes with white on top, blue in the center, and red on the bottom. The flag was initially used as an ensign on Russian merchant ships as far back as 1696. The tri-color remained in use as an unofficial banner until 1896, when it was made the official flag of the Russian Empire. In 1917, after the Russian Revolution, the tri-color flag was abolished in favor of the Soviet Flag until 1991 when the Soviet Union was dissolved. In 1993, the tri-color was officially restored as the official flag of the Russian Federation.
