This is a beautifully embroidered and sewn cotton 12×18 Rebel flag. The rectangular battle flag was used by some Confederate infantry, artillery, and cavalry units, but not as common as the square configuration. The rectangular flag also served as the Confederate Navy Jack.

Cotton flags feature a very heavy, luxurious look and feel. They are commonly used indoors because of their old-world, hand-crafted appearance but can also be flown outside, although they are not very durable or fade resistant with prolonged exposure to the outdoor elements. Cotton flags are also suitable for tea staining and/or framing and hanging indoors. The 12×18 size is particularly suited for framing because of the small size.
