Early Georgia State 3×5 Cotton Flag

This beautiful reproduction of an early Georgia state flag features a dark blue background with the state coat of arms stitched on with meticulous attention to detail. The artwork appears on both sides of the flag and the lettering reads correctly on one side only

History of the Pre 1879 Georgia Flag

The state of Georgia did not have an official state flag prior to 1879 and although it is unclear when flags with the Georgia state coat of arms first started to appear (since they were unofficial), Georgia militia units that were deployed outside the state during the American civil war were provided with regimental flags that included the state coat of arms and the name of the regiment. Many of the regimental flags would have looked very much like the flag pictured here.

Cotton flags feature a very heavy, luxurious look and feel. They are commonly used indoors because of their old world, hand crafted appearance but can also be flown outside, although they are not very durable or fade resistant with prolonged exposure to the outdoor elements. Cotton flags are also suitable for tea staining and/or framing and hanging indoors.

  • Heavy, soft cotton fabric
  • Appliqued artwork with embroidered lettering and outlines
  • Heavy canvas header with brass grommets
