Official Michigan State Flag 1911- Present

The current flag of the state of Michigan was adopted on August 1st, 1911, and is the third official state flag. The present-day design consists of the Michigan state coat of arms centered on a blue field. The coat of arms depicts an elk and a moose standing on either side of a blue shield which shows a sun rising over a lake and a peninsula. A man is standing on the peninsula with a raised hand representing peace while holding a long gun in the other hand symbolizing the fight for state and nation. The elk and moose are symbolic of the great animals of Michigan, while the bald eagle represents the United States. Three Latin mottos appear on the coat of arms in the following order: On the red ribbon just above the eagle is “E Pluribus Unum” which means “Out of many, one,” (one of the mottos of the United States). On the light blue shield the word “Tuebor,” means “I will defend,” and at the bottom of the coat of arms, a white ribbon bears the phrase “Si Quæris Peninsulam Amœnam Circumspice” meaning “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you.” This is the official state motto. Michigan also has an official flag month from June 14 through July 14.
