The national flag of Mexico consists of a vertical tricolor of green, white, and red stripes with the national coat of arms appearing in the center of the white stripe. The coat of arms is based on the Aztec symbol for Tenochtitlan, which was the center of the Aztec empire. According to legend, the eagle sitting on a cactus while devouring a serpent signaled to the Aztecs where to find their city, Tenochtitlan, which is now Mexico City. The green, white, and red tricolor flag was adopted by the Mexican government in 1821 just after she won her independence from Spain. The configuration of the coat of arms in the center has been slightly modified several times over the years but has always consisted of an eagle, serpent, and cactus. The current design was adopted in 1968. The meaning of the colors has also been revised over the years, but originally, green symbolized the quest for freedom. The white was for the cleanliness of the Catholic Church and the red stands for the Spaniards who joined in the quest for independence and the blood that was shed by the heroes who died for the cause.
Nylon is a durable, lightweight material that flies easily in a light breeze. The National Coat of Arms is dyed onto the center white nylon fabric panel so that all of the intricate details of the artwork are captured and penetrate through to the opposite side so the image is visible on both sides of the flag. The green and red panels are sewn onto either side of the center white panel.
