Official California State Flag From 1911 – Present

California Republic flag. Designed by William Todd, nephew of Mary Todd Lincoln, the grizzly bear flag was first raised at Sonoma on June, 14th 1846 when a small group of settlers marched on the Mexican garrison there and took the commandant prisoner. They proclaimed California to be a sovereign republic, independent from Mexico. This conflict is known as the “Bear Flag Revolt”. The flag only flew until July 9th of that same year when it was learned that The US was already at war with Mexico. The American flag replaced the grizzly bear flag soon thereafter. California officially became the 31st state on September, 9th 1850. The California State Legislature adopted the grizzly bear flag as the official state flag in 1911.

The great grizzly bear stands for strength, the red signifies courage while the white background represents purity. The five-pointed red star is for sovereignty and also makes reference to the lone star of Texas
