Present-Day Flag of The United Kingdom – Low Cost

British Union Jack 3×5 Flag. Also known as the Union Flag it is the de facto flag of Great Britain, although there is no law making it official. The British flag combines three different heraldic symbols together thus creating the iconic and widely recognized Union Jack. The upright Red Cross against a white field is St. George’s Cross which represents England, while the white Saltire Cross against a field of blue is St. Andrew’s Cross for Scotland and the red Saltire Cross on a white background is St. Patrick’s Cross and represents Ireland. In 1603, after the passing of Queen Elizabeth I, her cousin, King James VI of Scotland inherited the throne of England and Ireland, as Elizabeth was childless and had no heirs to take over the monarchy. In 1606 The first Union Jack, also known as the King’s Colours was fashioned with St. George’s and St. Andrews Crosses thus representing the new union of England and Scotland. This flag was flown primarily as a maritime flag until 1707 when it began to be displayed more generally. In 1801 by royal decree, the St. Patrick’s Cross was added to the design to represent the union of Great Britain and Ireland. Although the Republic of Ireland is no longer part of the UK, Northern Ireland is.
