The Arizona State Flag was adopted by the third state legislature on February 27th, 1917, and pays tribute to the Spanish Conquistadors who explored that part of the continent hundreds of years ago as the current flag of Spain is primarily made up of the same shades of red and yellow as the Arizona flag. The design consists of thirteen alternating red and yellow rays above a field of blue with a large copper star in the center. The thirteen rays represent the original thirteen colonies while the copper star acknowledges the fact that Arizona is the largest copper-producing state in the US. The red and blue are the same as those on the American Flag.
