Official Alabama State Flag 1895 – Present (Printed Polyester)
The official Alabama State Flag design was adopted by the legislature on February 16th, 1895. The design consists of a crimson Saint Andrew’s Cross against a pure white background. The Cross represents the shape of the cross on which Saint Andrew was crucified. It is referred to as a diagonal Cross or as a saltire and is a common component used in various different flag and coat of arms designs around the world. Alabama’s state flag closely resembles the Florida State flag both of which date back to the Spanish Cross of Burgundy which was generally used in Spanish territories between 1513 and 1821. Both Florida and portions of what is now southern Alabama were part of the Spanish Florida territory between 1513 and 1698 which suggests that the Spanish Cross of Burgundy likely inspired the design for Alabama’s state flag. There is, however, no documentation as to what the legislature considered as inspiration for the flag’s design. The Alabama State Flag remains unchanged from its adoption in 1895 until this day.
