5th Kentucky Infantry Orphan Brigade Flag
The 5th Kentucky Infantry was part of the Kentucky Orphan Brigade which was made up of six different Kentucky infantry regiments, some of which carried a dark blue flag with an upright red Christian Cross in the center adorned with thirteen white stars. This flag design was not popular on the battlefield as it sometimes appeared as a black flag when furled. The 5th Kentucky, however, carried 1st national Confederate-style flag except the 11 stars were arranged in the pattern of a cross similar to the aforementioned dark blue flag. A religious Christian theme is noticeable in the design of many Civil War-era battle flags both on the Union and Confederate sides as most of the men involved were devout Christians and the symbolism was important as well as inspiring.
