USCT 4th Baltimore Infantry Regiment Outdoor Flag – Two-Ply Polyester

Organized in Baltimore between July and September of 1863, shortly after President Lincoln authorized the creation of black infantry regiments in Maryland, the 4th Baltimore Regiment was made up of 1002 men. Raised by Colonel William Birney, about half were free men and half were either fugitive or recently freed slaves. Infuriating local slave owners, Colonel Birney emptied out the jails and slave pens in Baltimore of the slaves that were willing to enlist in the Union Army. Most of those men were sent there by their owners to avoid military service upon receiving word that colored military units were going to be raised in the state of Maryland. The regiment lost a total of 292 men. 105 were killed in combat and 187 died from diseases. A total of three enlisted men of the 4th Baltimore received medals of honor for their bravery at the battle of New Market Heights. By the end of the war, approximately 186.000 men served in the United States Colored Troops, 8,700 of which came from the state of Maryland.

History of the Flag of the 4th Baltimore Colored Troops

Presented to the regiment by the Colored Ladies of Baltimore in late summer or early fall of 1863. The original flag is one of the very few surviving flags of any of the Colored Troops Infantry Regiments and is currently owned by the Maryland Historical Society.

This is a reproduction of the flag that was carried into battle by the men of the 4th Baltimore. The actual dimensions and materials are not exactly the same as the original flag. 2-ply polyester is the most durable option for those who fly their flag 24/7. This flag features beautifully embroidered artwork, stars, and lettering with rich, vibrant colors. All of the artwork is visible on both sides of the flag and the lettering reads correctly from one side only.

  • Heavy duty construction
  • Fade-resistant
  • Sewn panels with embroidered lettering and details
  • Heavy canvas header with brass grommets
  • 4 rows of stitching on the fly end to prevent premature fraying
  • Flag size: 3’x5′
