History of the 49-star flag
One star was added to the American flag on July 4th, 1959 to recognize Alaska as the 49th state. Alaska was admitted on January 3rd, 1959. The American flag would bear 49 stars for only one year as Hawaii became the 50th state on August 21st, 1959 and a 50th star was added and made official on July 4th, 1960.
