History of the 48-star flag

Two stars were added to the American flag on July 4th, 1912 to recognize New Mexico and Arizona as the 47th and 48th states respectively. New Mexico was admitted on January 6th and Arizona on February 14th, 1912. The American flag would bear 48 stars for the next 47 years, through two world wars and eight US Presidents until July 4th, 1959 as Alaska became the 49th state on January 3rd, 1959. Only one short year later, the number of stars on the American flag grew to 50 as Hawaii became the 50th state on August 21st, 1959. The 50-star version of the flag became official on July 4th, 1960.
