Two-Ply Polyester Twentieth Maine Infantry Regiment Outdoor 3×5 Flag

The 20th Maine Infantry Volunteers is best known for the key role they played in the defense of Little Round Top during the battle of Gettysburg on July 2nd, 1863. The far left flank of the Union line consisted of the 20th Maine and the 83rd Pennsylvania. Commanded by Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, the 20th Maine had repulsed repeated attacks by the 15th Alabama, but were suffering heavy casualties and almost out of ammunition. Chamberlain, aware of the seriousness of the situation and that his men would not be able to stop another advance from the attacking Confederate forces, ordered his men to file out in a long line and prepare for a bayonet charge. In a surprise attack, The men of the 20th Maine executed a simultaneous frontal and flanking assault against the Confederate forces, which resulted in the capture of a significant portion of the 15th Alabama while Lieutenant Holman Melcher (also of the 20th Maine) ordered a spontaneous and separate attack from the center further aiding in forcing a full enemy retreat thus exposing them to a volley of rifle fire from Company B of the 20th Maine sharpshooters. Holding the high ground of Little Round Top proved to be an important factor in the ultimate Union victory at Gettysburg. Thirty years later, Chamberlain was awarded the Medal of Honor in recognition of his conduct during the campaign. The citation read that it was awarded for “daring heroism and great tenacity in holding his position on the Little Round Top against repeated assaults, and ordering the advance position on the Great Round Top.”
