Third Georgia State Flag
The 1956 (or second) Georgia State flag, which consisted of the Georgia State Seal on the left-hand or hoist-side of the flag and a square Confederate battle flag on the fly-end or right-hand side was the source of much controversy throughout the 1990s, especially during the run-up to the 1996 Olympic games. As a compromise between those who wanted to see the Confederate element removed from the flag and those who wanted to preserve the aspects of the 1956 design, this third state flag design was adopted by the Georgia legislature in 2001. It incorporated smaller images of various flag designs that were relevant to the history of the state of Georgia, including a 13-star Betsy Ross flag. The pre-1879 Georgia colonial flag. The first official Georgia State flag (1920 – 1956). The second Georgia State flag (1956 – 2001) and the 50-star American flag. The small images of the flags were depicted on a gold banner that read “Georgia’s History” and “In God We Trust” just under the banner. Due to widespread opposition to the new flag design, it was nicknamed “Barnes Rag” as Roy Barnes was the state’s Governor at the time and was instrumental in hurrying the new design through the legislature in 2001. The flag design was so unpopular, that it is believed to be a large part of the reason Roy Barnes was defeated in the 2002 Gubernatorial election by Sonny Purdue who ran partially on the platform of allowing Georgians to choose their own flag in a state referendum. Purdue authorized Georgia’s legislature to draft a new flag design in 2003 and the current (fourth) Georgia State flag was adopted by popular vote in the state’s March 2nd, 2004 presidential primary election.
